2016, 2017 | A Personal Post

2016 was a year of firsts for me. I was blessed to photograph my first three weddings this year! It was also my first year with my son - from loaf-sized infant to nearly walking! Also my first year as a mom of two - busy, busy, busy!; first time visiting Cape Breton (beautiful people) as well as the opposite side of the country, British Colombia (beautiful mountains); and the first summer with the trailer spent camping with my family (my absolute favourite way to spend a summer, other than photographing weddings of course!)

Lets talk accomplishments. There has only been one year that I can remember where I actually followed through with a New Year's Resolution. In 2016, wanted to make it a personal goal of mine to read more books. Procrastination took over for the better half of the year but come summer time I bit the bullet and opened a book. Here's what I learned: books are damn good! Not only did I enjoy some good reads, but I also discovered that if I chose to make time for myself to read, I was able to unwind and find a peace and serenity I was unaware of before. Before reading I would usually fill my spare time with social media or television - which are the busy, flashy, loud and the opposite of calming. Of course I still indulge in those guilty pleasures, but it's nice to have another outlet that offers a quiet place for my brain to become enthralled in a story with the visuals solely confined to my imagination. Some of the past year's reads were these:

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, JK Rowling
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, JK Rowling
Anna and the French Kiss, Stephanie Perkins
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, JK Rowling
Isla and the Happily Ever After, Stephanie Perkins
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, JK Rowling
The Girl on the Train, Paula Hawkins
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, JK Rowling
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, JK Rowling
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, JK Rowling (ok, so I haven't finished this one yet)

I think it's safe to say that since the summer I've accomplished a fair amount of reading! And it's also safe to say I've become completely obsessed with Harry Potter. NO SHAME! "Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light" -Albus Dumbledore.

More sharing. More documenting. More memories preserved.

More travel. Not just big trips involving plane rides or hours spent driving. Although I do have some of those planned which should be very exciting! But I'm also talking about quick day trips. Quick travels to my backyard, nearby areas that I've never been to before. Bring on the new!! I'm excited to let my curiosity take over. This year there are beautiful new places to see and amazing people to share it with.

Drink more water. My skin will thank me later. Truthfully, it's just plain good for my overall health. Cheers!

Be more present. Put the phone down. Live in the moment. Disconnect from gadgets and reconnect with relationships. There's a time to look through a camera and there's a time to put it away, take it all in and enjoy the experience.

Teach more, nag less. This is my "mom" resolution for this year. Now having two kids at different stages, I've become a little unfair to my oldest by expecting more from her than I probably should. Working on my patience and finding teachable moments is going to be a top priority this year.

More love. More Laughter. Because it's what the world needs.
